From September 23 to October 18, Petra will be exhibiting stone-based works and sculptures alongside Rob van Doeselaar, who creates large-scale paintings. Mutual friend Carel de Groot will open the exhibition on Saturday, September 26, at 4:00 PM.
Rob and Petra have lived and worked on different continents and in diverse countries, each following their own path. They met twenty-five years ago while they were both staying in Accra, Ghana. As artists, constantly moving to new countries means you have to find new points of reference for your work time and again. In doing so, you shift your own boundaries and learn to relate to other cultures, far removed from the Dutch roots. It is precisely this constant movement and adaptation that have strongly influenced the artistry and the work Rob and Petra create.
Petra’s ceramic work originated in the highlands of Bolivia, where she felt an immediate connection to the medium of clay. In her recent work, stones serve as the starting point. They allude to sacred sites in other cultures and to cairns—simple stacks of stones that mark the way in mountainous terrain. Cairns provide a sense of orientation; they are traces left behind by those who passed that way before.
The exhibition runs until Sunday, October 18.
