DuO’s is a presentation of the members of the Haagse Kunstkring and takes place from the 2nd of July until the 24th of August. The artists work in duo’s or small groups and create a presentation together.
For this exhibition, Petra de Vree and Lynette de Vries worked together. They both have lived a significant portion of their lives outside their native countries. Besides this similarity—where the Netherlands is a foreign country for Lynette, and her native country for Petra—they also share another source of inspiration: the powerful woman.
Their collaborative work brings this theme to life through the depiction of a woman as a rock amidst the waves. Petra’s signature ceramic sculptures of strong women play a central role. In the sculpture “Language in Texture,” she brings together handicrafts created by women from various continents. The use of color is reminiscent of Delftware, giving the sculpture a Dutch foundation.
Lynette complements this sculpture with a large acrylic painting on canvas, depicting the same woman within a vast seascape. Note that the sea connects continents. The interplay between painting and sculpture creates a dynamic dialogue between the disciplines.
The way these works are exhibited strengthens their mutual relationship and allows the viewer to experience the composition on multiple levels. Through this collaboration, Petra and Lynette elevate their art to a new level, maintaining their distinct styles while simultaneously expressing a shared artistic vision. Their work is an ode to women as symbols of strength, resilience, and connection with their surroundings.
