Who is the Frog?

The sculpture is a tribute to the skilled hands of people who can create exquisite handicrafts. Petra wants to draw attention to the idea that we are slowly but surely losing these kind of skills. She came across her grandmother’s crocheted bridal gloves, which were over 100 years old. She realized that she herself had never learned to make this type of crochet with such a fine hook. There are many more techniques we no longer master. In some Asian countries, they still do, but even there, younger generations prefer to watch footage on TikTok. With the series “Skilled Hands,” Petra wants to draw attention to the beauty of this delicate craft.

The title “Who is the Frog?” is a nod to the well-known fairy tale in which a frog turns into a prince. The frog on the robe is the work of an old lacemaker from Bruges. The sculpture is built on her grandmother’s glove, which is visible at the bottom of the sculpture.
