Handy Hands
Like the other works in this series, the sculpture is a tribute to handmade items. The underlying idea behind this series goes deeper than that. While living in Asia, Petra witnessed a country’s traditional architectural style give way to straightforward concrete apartment complexes. In major Asian cities, these are interchangeable, while previously, distinctive architectural styles defined the character of a city or country. The same happened with clothing. In Kathmandu, for example, the traditional red saris have relatively quickly given way to blue jeans and white T-shirts. Of course these are more comfortable, but the tradition and individuality got lost. With the “Skilled Hands” series, Petra aims to draw attention to this phenomenon.
By traveling and living in other parts of the world, Petra collected a lot of local handmade items. If you take a closer look to the prints used on the dress of Handy Hands, you discover different prints that come from those items such as wood carving, silver work, crochet, lace making, embroidery, and stone carving. The items themselves were made in Asian and African countries, and also in The Netherlands.
