Sea Watches Back
The sculpture symbolizes the sea and is made out of clay, glazes, and sand.
Petra’s admiration for life in the sea began at a young age and like many of us she worries about the impact of rising temperatures on sea life such as the colorful fish, the unique creatures and incredible corals beneath the water.
The prints you find in the sculpture are made with shells and remains of marine life that were found on beaches all over the world. Some of the prints are recognizable as shells, others require a closer look to understand their origin. Here and there you can find traces of fine sand, which Petra brought from the coast of Bangladesh. This country faces the same challenges as the Netherlands.
Generally, people focus on the land, yet, the water of the oceans unites the land. People from all continents should unite much more than we do now, also to protect the climate and fragile marine life as well as our own life. While humanity causes sea levels to rise, the sea watches back to humanity to act.
